# Not just meetings: turn any calendar event into a real alarm on iPhone

> Flights, medical appointments, interviews, school pickups — the most expensive things to miss usually aren't meetings, and calendar banners won't wake you for them. Here's how MeetAlarm now turns any timed calendar event into a real alarm that rings through Silent, on the free plan.

MeetAlarm started with one job: make meetings ring like real alarms instead of polite banners. But the feedback that kept arriving told a bigger story. The events people were most afraid of missing weren't meetings at all — they were flights, doctor's appointments booked six weeks out, job interviews, school pickups. So in the latest update we removed the fence: any timed event on your calendar can now become a real alarm that rings through Silent and Focus. And this isn't a paid upsell — it works on the free plan.

## Why it was meetings-only at first

From day one, MeetAlarm filtered your calendar down to events that had attendees or a meeting link. For people living in back-to-back video calls, that's exactly right — it keeps the timeline clean and never rings for “Gym” or “Lunch?”. But the same filter silently excluded a whole class of events: the ones with no attendees and no link, where being late costs the most. That filter is now just a switch, and you decide.

## The most expensive events on your calendar aren't meetings

Think about what actually goes wrong when each kind of event slips past you:

- A flight or train departure — miss the leave-by moment and no apology fixes it.
- A medical appointment booked weeks ago — showing up late often means rebooking into next month.
- A job interview — the one calendar entry where “sorry, my phone was on silent” is not an option.
- School pickup or a repair-person window — someone is physically standing there waiting for you.
- Visa, bank, or government appointments — bureaucracies do not do second chances kindly.

None of these have attendees or a Zoom link, so under the old filter they got no alarm. And the system Calendar app only ever gives them a notification banner — which, as I've written before, will never make a sound while your iPhone is on Silent. The events that carry the highest cost of missing were getting the weakest form of reminder iOS has.

## If you have ADHD or time blindness, banners were never going to work

A notification asks you to remember. An alarm remembers for you. That difference is easy to shrug off if your sense of elapsed time is reliable — and enormous if it isn't. For a lot of people with ADHD or time blindness, a banner that slides away is functionally invisible: out of sight, out of mind, not as a figure of speech but as a literal description. What helps isn't more banners or more discipline; it's an interruption the system guarantees — full-screen, audible through Silent, ringing until you respond. That's a mechanism fix, not a willpower fix. Opening this up beyond meetings is what makes MeetAlarm usable as that mechanism for everything with a time attached.

## How to turn it on

If you're installing fresh, onboarding now asks the question directly — “What should never slip past you?” — and you pick “Meetings only” or “Everything important”. Already using MeetAlarm? It's one switch:

- Open MeetAlarm and go to your calendar list.
- Open the rules for the calendar you use.
- Turn off “Meetings only”.
- That's it — the timeline refreshes, and timed events without attendees or links now get real alarms too.

On the free plan this works on your one enabled calendar; Pro lets you enable multiple calendars with per-calendar rules, so work can stay meetings-only while a personal calendar rings for everything.

## A tip: curate the calendar, not the alarms

The unit of control here is the calendar, and that turns out to be the sane way to manage it. Rather than deciding alarm-by-alarm, keep one calendar where everything is genuinely time-critical — appointments, departures, deadlines with a clock on them — and let that whole calendar ring. All-day events (birthdays, “Q3 planning week”) don't ring by default, so a date-only entry won't wake you at midnight.

## Quick answers

- Is this free? Yes. Turning off “Meetings only” works on the free plan, on your enabled calendar.
- Does it really ring on Silent and in Focus modes? Yes — these are AlarmKit alarms, the same class of alarm as the Clock app, not notifications.
- Will items from the Reminders app ring? No — MeetAlarm reads your calendars. Give something a time on the calendar and it can ring.
- What about all-day events? Skipped by default, so date-only entries never turn into surprise alarms.
- Do I need an account? No. Your calendar is read on-device; there's no server and no signup.

Your calendar already holds everything you've promised to show up for. Now all of it — not just the entries with a video link — can get the one kind of reminder iOS can't mute by accident.
